First Aid Training

The mainstay of EDSFAT is First Aid. One way we "Support Scouting Events" is by providing training to leaders and young people within the Scout Association.

The main way EDFSAT provides training to Leaders is through the East Sussex County Training office. Two different courses can be offered: a First Response Course or a Red Cross accredited course.
In the past EDSFAT has taught First Response Courses. However, these are being phased out and replaced with Red Cross accredited one day First Aid courses. These courses are recognised outside the Scout Association, but the primary reason for training must be for use within the Scout Association. A couple of EDSFAT members have completed a Red Cross trainers training course, run by the Red Cross for the Scout Association, allowing EDSFAT to teach the courses.

To help provide First Aid training to the young people EDSFAT either organise a complete training day for a number of groups, or attend a regular evening meeting. The new Scout Association progressive "Emergency Aid" badge scheme provides a structured set of areas that have to be covered and give the Young People a progressive shceme to work through. If you know of a group that would benefit from EDSFAT attending and providing some sort of First Aid training then please get in contact.

Red Cross Practical First Aid Certificate

The Scout Association in Partnership with the Red Cross has allowed Scout trainers teach the Red Cross Practical First Aid Certificate. This is a one day First Aid qualification that is equivalent to the First Response Course but allows the candidates to use the qualification outside of Scouting. The course is a minimum of 6 hours and incorporates the minimum of:

  • The Principles of First Aid and Initial Response (arriving at and managing an incident).
  • Emergency Life Support (DRABC, and the recovery position).
  • CPR, including technique for children.
  • Shock
  • Bleeding (major and minor)
  • Causes and treatment of unconsciousness.
  • Heat exhaustion, heat-stroke and hypothermia.
  • Burns and scalds.
  • Fractures and soft tissue injuries.
  • Minor injuries (for example, cuts, grazes and nosebleeds)
  • Meningitis.
First Aid Training - Recovery Position

It is possible to undergo a refresher/requalification course for this or a First Response course as long as your current qualification is still in date. The refresher course lasts 2-3 hrs.

First Response Courses

Before the introduction of the new Red Cross courses EDSFAT used to run a number of First Response throughout East and West Sussex. The courses are run with a high element of fun and humour. The courses also have a high level of participant input, as the experiences of active Scout Leaders give the best insite into the types of accidents and incidents that can and do occur at activities. These courses can be run for groups numbering between 12 and 20 participants and are organised on a single full day basis. EDSFAT can arrange courses for specific groups, or groups of individuals, and are a useful chance for Explorers Scouts to gain the basic First Aid qualification required to become a leader. However, due to EDSFAT being very busy for a large proportion of the year these courses need to be arranged at least 6 months in advance. Please contact us to discuss.

First Aid Training - Resusitation Extract from 1st Response Working Group:
1st Response is a training package designed to help leaders within The Guide Association and The Scout Association build up their confidence and skills to cope should an incident occur. Knowing what to do and what your limitations are is important as incidents can happen at any time - at a unit meeting, out-of-doors, on a residential event etc. You may be the first person to arrive at the scene of an emergency and you will need to take control of a situation until somebody more experienced can take over from you. This includes dealing with the first aid emergency as well as coping with other people and dangerous situations.

Similar to the Red Cross course it is possible to do a refresher/requalification course lasting 2-3 hrs if your current qualification is still current to prevent you having to do the whole course again.

Emergency Aid Badge Scheme

The Scout Association in Partnership with the Red Cross have developed the "Emergency Aid" Staged Activty badge scheme for Young People to be trained within.

The basic premise is that the staged badge scheme follows the ability of the young people as they progress through Scouting.

The Emergency Aid 4 badge exceeeds the requirements of the First Response course.
